Excavations at Berkeley 1 were undertaken on behalf of Wexford County Council as part of the Stage (iii) archaeological services contract prior to the commencement of construction of the N25 New Ross bypass road scheme.
Excavation at Berkeley 1 revealed evidence of fulacht fiadh activity in the form of a subrectangular trough with maximum dimensions of 2.67m (west-north-west/east-south-east) by 1.73m by 0.28m deep. Three stake-holes were identified in the base of this feature; these averaged 0.13m in length, 0.1m in width and 0.25m in depth. They were situated beneath the fill of the trough, which contained frequent amounts of charcoal and heat-affected stones. This material was related to the overlying burnt spread, which measured 7.4m (north-west/south-east) by 6.6m by 0.12m deep.
A number of agricultural drainage ditches truncated the aforementioned activity.
