The proposed development of a dwelling-house and associated siteworks at Barrystown, Wellingtonbridge, was within the zone of archaeological potential for Barrystown Castle (WX045–02001–01), an 18th–19th-century house (WX045–02001–02), and a structure (WX045–02001–03). Barrystown mines (WX045–055) were located c. 370m north-north-west of the proposed development.
Test-trenching was carried out at the site on 29 May 2010. The site was situated within the walled garden of Barrystown House. The development involved alterations and additions to the existing coach-house to form a dwelling and a proprietary sewage-treatment unit, reed-bed system, soil-polishing filter and associated site works.
Five test-trenches were dug to the natural ground level. The topsoil and natural subsoil were consistent throughout the site. The topsoil was composed of mid-brown medium sandy clay which contained moderate inclusions of sub-angular pebbles. It ranged from 0.47m to 0.8m in depth. The natural subsoil was a mid-yellow/brown silty clay.
No finds or features of archaeological significance were exposed in any of the test-trenches.
