The Mullingar flood alleviation scheme, which commenced in 2009, continued into 2010. The scheme was being carried out by the Office of Public Works on behalf of Westmeath County Council and comprised flood relief works on the Brosna River in Mullingar. As the river was partly situated within WM019–089, Mullingar town, and in close proximity to the former location of the Mullingar town walls, a ministerial consent was obtained before the works proceeded. This was granted in 2008. Monitoring was recommended for all the groundworks and underwater works associated with the flood relief works.
Judith Carroll & Company Ltd was contracted for this work and had already carried out archaeological assessments and underwater surveys for this scheme, including a wade survey and metal-detection survey for the Brosna River in 2008.
Monitoring took place until 7 May 2010, when all subsurface and underwater works were finalised. No finds or features of archaeological significance came to light.
