Testing was carried out at Stafford Street, Nenagh, Co. Tipperary. The client was granted permission to demolish a hardware shop and to construct a three-storey educational unit and ancillary works.
A total of four trenches were mechanically excavated across the development site. Each trench was stripped down to the natural subsoil. No finds or features of archaeological significance were revealed. A cobbled yard was noticed across the tested area; this was probably the remains of the market site that was present there in the past. In the eastern part, under the cobbled yard, a metal pipe was noted. A drain running south-east/north-west was observed in the western portion of the proposed development area. No finds were identified during the works.
