This site was identified as a transversely laid roundwood togher during the Peatland Survey 2006 (TS-KLN002a–d) and was subsequently dated to ad 150–430. It was orientated north-west to south-east towards a dry land island on which Derrynaflan church (TS054–002) is located. It was recorded on the field surface at four sightings as being composed of transversely laid roundwood interspersed with brushwood elements. Three cuttings were excavated in proximity to the centre and both ends of the trackway. During the excavation the site was visible on an additional two field surfaces to the south-east indicating a total known length of approximately 115m for the trackway.
This transverse roundwood trackway with occasional longitudinal supports was uniform along its length. The densely laid transverse elements created a very even, stable surface that only required the additional support of underlying longitudinal elements at some locations. It measured 1.5–2m in width and 0.02–0.12m in depth. The trackway is clearly orientated towards the dry land island at Lurgoe and it is likely that it extended towards the dry land at the south-eastern edge of the bog but has been destroyed by industrial peat production.
