Monitoring was undertaken along part of Dominic Street/Moor Lane as part of footpath renewal works. A section of the works were located beside St Dominic’s Abbey, a national monument.
Seven distinct stretches were opened as part of this renewal scheme, with the southern part of one section within 3m of the northern wall of St Dominic’s Abbey; however, this section was contained within the modern road build-up and topsoil of the green area. In the first section opened it was noticeable there was no presence of cobbles, especially at the northern end as revealed during the pavement replacement works of late 2009 (Excavations 2009, No. 742). This would suggest they were previously removed during the laying of the concrete pavement.
All of the sections opened were shallow and were contained within either the modern road build-up or groundworks associated with the laying of the green. No archaeological features, deposits or artifacts were revealed during this scheme.
