Monitoring was undertaken along a part of Friar Street and Upper Friar Street as part of footpath renewal works. A section of the works were located where it was believed the town wall – a national monument – crosses Friar Street.
Groundworks associated with this scheme entailed the removal of existing footpaths and the kerb line as well as the laying of a drainage duct beneath the renewed footpath on a short section on the west side of Friar Street and along the opposing side of part of Upper Friar Street.
Although the excavation works were shallow in depth, the natural deposition was exposed in parts of this scheme, whilst other areas opened revealed an exposed soil context of relatively modern provenance. Even though the works were within close proximity of the town wall, no archaeological features or deposits were exposed during this scheme.
