Toobrackan 4 was discovered during a second phase of testing undertaken in 2010 (see No. 563 above, 10E0299) along the proposed N5 Ballaghaderreen bypass. The Stage (iii) excavation work was undertaken between 11 and 15 October 2010.
Nine pit features were excavated at Toobrackan 4. They did not appear to form any particular pattern but were clustered in a very small area. They may be associated with activity that was situated outside the CPO or with archaeological features that no longer remain. The features have been tentatively described as pit/hearths, pit and post-holes. This is based on their shape and, in the case of the pit/hearths, on evidence for scorched clay and charred hazel nuts.
