Teevnacreeva 1 was discovered during a first phase of testing undertaken by Nial O’Neill in 2009 along the proposed N5 Ballaghaderreen bypass (Excavations 2009, No. 699, 09E0475). The Stage (iii) excavation work was undertaken between 18 and 20 September 2010.
The site revealed two pit features. Both pits were shallow and contained charcoal. One pit contained burnt bone and was dated to ad 20–220 (SUERC–27344) in the late Iron Age (Doyle 2009). The second pit contained moderately compact grey peaty silt with some charcoal and was probably associated with the dated pit. No finds were recovered from across the site. Analysis of the bone will determine whether it is human or animal and will assist in interpreting whether the pit was used for cooking or represents a truncated cremation burial.
