Keelbanada 2 was identified as a burnt mound during the first phase of archaeological testing undertaken by Tara Doyle in 2009 (Excavations 2009, No. 688, 09E0476) within the footprint of the proposed N5 Ballaghaderreen bypass. The Stage (iii) excavation work at Keelbanada 2 was undertaken between 16 and 20 August 2010.
The site represented a severely truncated burnt mound with two troughs and pits. The troughs were not lined. A shallow horseshoe-shaped deposit of heat-shattered stone and charcoal surrounded the troughs on their northern side. The site was located at c. 75m OD and c. 3.2km east of the Ballaghaderreen town and c. 1.5km south-east of the River Lung. The surrounding topography was comprised of relatively level boggy fields.
