Keelbanada 1 was identified as a burnt mound during the first phase of testing undertaken in 2009 by Tara Doyle (Excavations 2009, No. 688, 09E0476) within the footprint of the proposed N5 Ballaghaderreen bypass. The Stage (iii) excavation work at Keelbanada 1 was undertaken between 16 and 20 August 2010.
Keelbanada comprised a single deposit which represented a truncated and disturbed burnt mound. The thin spread of heat-shattered material was roughly horseshoe-shaped. There were no other features identified on the site in association with this deposit. The burnt-mound material did not fill any subsoil cut features, though some of the deposit had settled within natural depressions.
