Testing was undertaken in advance of the N5 Ballaghaderreen bypass, Co. Roscommon. The work, untaken on behalf of Roscommon County Council, took place between 26 July and 16 August 2010. A total of 9936 linear metres were excavated within the four areas to be tested (Areas 1–4). Five archaeological sites were discovered during the course of the works – Bockagh 2–6. Bockagh 2–5 comprised a series of burnt mounds and spreads, all of which were clustered within a 500m radius of each other. A further burnt mound was identified in a previous phase of testing in Bockagh to the east of this group (Bockagh 1, 10E0300; No. 564 above). Bockagh 6 comprised a limekiln. Although it was not illustrated on the first-edition 6-inch OS maps or the 25-inch OS maps there are several (approximately six) limekilns located along the local roads c. 300m to the north and north-west of Bockagh 6. There are one or two kilns marked c. 500m south and south-west of the scheme footprint, associated with small houses. Bockagh 2–6 were later excavated by James Kyle (10E0377, 10E0378, 10E0379, 10E0380 and 10E0381; Nos 564–569 above).
