Monitoring, in association with the construction of a domestic garage, was carried out at Coggalbeg townland, 6km south-west of Strokestown, Co. Roscommon, in December 2010. The site is located adjacent to a large, well-preserved moated site (RO029–117), probably constructed in the 13th/14th century. The moated site rests on slightly higher ground overlooking a landscape comprised of pasture and Coggal Lough to the north. The site is a national monument and is also protected by a preservation order (P.O. 2 of 1982). Despite objection from the National Monument Service, Roscommon County Council gave permission for the construction of a single dwelling-house in close proximity to the moated site. A 2002 assessment by Sue Zajac (Excavations 2002, No. 1597, 02E0005) revealed no archaeology within the four excavated test-trenches. All excavation works associated with the domestic garage were monitored and no evidence of archaeological features, finds or materials was uncovered.
