Test excavations were carried out on the proposed site for a new bridge across the River Suck. The proposed bridge location is just north of the medieval bridge, on a slightly different alignment. The old bridge has significant standing masonry remains, located 18m west of the west bank of the Suck but also along the riverbank on both sides.
No significant archaeological remains were located during the test excavation. However, masonry rubble fill, identified in one of the trenches, may have come from the original medieval bridge and a small water channel, possibly associated with the mill-race, was uncovered, although there was no evidence of the actual mill-race. There is also potential for other archaeological material to be uncovered during the construction works, especially along the river Suck.
