Bockagh 5 was identified as a burnt mound during the second phase of testing undertaken (see No. 577 below, 10E0298) within the footprint of the proposed N5 Ballaghaderreen bypass. The Stage (iii) excavation work was undertaken between 21 and 22 September 2010.
A single feature was excavated at Bockagh 5. It comprised a thin irregular deposit of heat-affected material and may be associated with the burnt mound located to the west at Bockagh 4. It may represent a hearth, although there were no obvious signs of in situ burning. It was found close to and may be associated with the cluster of burnt mounds identified in the townland of Bockagh (see Nos 564–7 above).
