Bockagh 4 was identified as a burnt mound during the second phase of testing undertaken (see No. 577, Excavations 2010, 10E0298) within the footprint of the proposed N5 Ballaghaderreen bypass. The Stage (iii) excavation work was undertaken between 1 September and 8 October 2010.

Three troughs with associated burnt mounds were identified. The largest mound sealed a substantial timber-lined trough and what appeared to be an associated cistern or pit. Probably associated with this but on a more elevated location was a second trough and pit. A third trough was located sealed beneath a separate mound to the south-west. This cluster of mounds was excavated close to three other mounds identified at Bockagh 3 (see No. 566, Excavations 2010) and a timber-lined trough at Bockagh. All these sites were within sight of each other and were spread across a relatively short area at the base of hill and on the edge of wetland.
