Bockagh 3 was identified as a burnt mound during the second phase of testing undertaken (see No. 577, Excavations 2010, 10E0298) within the footprint of the proposed N5 Ballaghaderreen bypass. The Stage (iii) excavation work was undertaken between 20 September and 1 October 2010.

Three burnt mounds were identified. Mound 1 had an associated trough which appeared to have been remodelled at a later date. Mound 2 also had an associated trough. The third mound was located on the northern edge of the site area which coincided with the edge of the road-take and was mostly outside of the CPO. The mounds appeared to have been levelled and a modern drain was recorded reclamation as the site was on the edge of a wetland. This cluster of three sites was excavated in association with Bockagh 2 (see No. 565, Excavations 2010) to the west and Bockagh 4 (see No. 567, Excavations 2010) to the east, which all formed part of a large cluster of burnt mounds.
