Testing was required of a proposed quarry at Bealanamullia, Castlesampson, Athlone; a Bord Planála decision concluded that archaeological work already completed on the project was incomplete. They overturned the recommendation of the National Monuments Service for monitoring.
Most of the extraction would involve the removal of esker material within the development area. Sixty-seven test-trenches were excavated along the tops of the eskers and on some parts of the lower parts of the site where the ground would be disturbed during construction. The hillsides could not be tested for safety reasons. No archaeological features or objects were found.
