Testing was undertaken in advance of the N2 Monaghan to Tirnaneill realignment: Kilnadreen to Tirnaneill road scheme, Co. Monaghan. The work was untaken on behalf of Monaghan County Council and took place between 6 and 22 October 2010.
A total of 700 linear metres of test-trenches were excavated within Areas 1 and 2 on the west side of the existing N2, while a further twenty test-pits, excavated by Monaghan County Council, were monitored in Area 3 (wetland) to the east of the N2. A single pit uncovered in Area 1 measured 1.04m north–south x 0.68m x 0.2m deep and was filled with a mid-grey clay silt containing frequent charcoal. Nothing was found in the fill of the pit to suggest its purpose or date. No other features were found in the area. The pit was fully excavated. Part of a structure found at the southern end of Area 2 has been identified on the first-edition OS map (1835). Nothing of archaeological significance was discovered in Area 3.
