The greenfield area adjacent to the enclosure at Liscromwell (MA079–001), which will be impacted on by developments associated with the N5 Westport Turlough road project, was tested.
The proposed roadworks adjacent to the fort extend roughly 1m into the western side and 3m into the southern side of the field in which the enclosure is located. This area is 2m from the edge of the enclosure. Testing consisted of a 1.9m-wide trench along the inner side of the southern field boundary for a distance of 43m and a 1m-wide trench along the inner side of the western field boundary for a distance of 8m. These trenches were excavated stratigraphically to previously undisturbed subsoil, using a mechanical digger with a toothless bucket. Despite the close proximity to an intact enclosure, nothing of archaeological interest was uncovered by this testing.
