This area of archaeological potential was tested at a pre-planning stage to assess the impact of the proposed N5 in this area. It was listed as a ‘ridge with extensive views’ – an area of archaeological potential (AP–2) in the draft EIS for the N5 Westport to Turlough road scheme, as it is a likely location, from a landscape point of view, for significant archaeological remains. Testing involved the excavation of nine, evenly spaced, 1.9m-wide test-trenches across the designated area, to undisturbed subsoil. This testing has established that the area is not archaeologically significant.
