est-trenching for a proposed development just outside Ballinrobe, on the north side of the R331 Claremorris Road and on the south bank of the River Robe, was conducted in December 2010. The testing identified the former edge of the Robe River flood-plain running through the centre of the site, and noted that extensive land improvement works in the modern period had raised the ground level of the northern half of the site.
In the past, the northern half of the proposed development site would have taken the form of a complex pattern of higher, drier ground and low-lying wetter ground, suggestive of small islands and peninsulas extending into the original channel of the river itself. Despite the potential for riverine sites of prehistoric and early historic date, no evidence was found for any archaeological material.
