Testing was carried out in advance of a mixed housing and commercial development in Foxford, Co. Mayo. Five test-trenches extending north-east/south-west across the site were excavated. No archaeological material was identified. Excavations revealed slightly peaty topsoil in the east of the site while elsewhere sandy silt topsoil was the norm. The dominant subsoil was grey/white, light-yellow/brown and orange/brown sand. Large boulders and/or rock outcrops were evident across the site and the small hillock in the west was shown to be a rock outcrop. The only features uncovered during testing were linear cuts associated with modern agricultural activities such as land division and drainage.
