This area of archaeological potential was tested to assess the impact of the proposed N5 in this area. It was identified in the draft EIS for the proposed N5 Westport to Turlough road scheme as an ‘isolated mound in bog’ (AP–8). As this prominent feature within low-lying peat may have been a focus for archaeological activity, it was appropriate to assess what mitigation measures may have been required.
The potential archaeological site consists of an irregular (roughly oval) raised area in low-lying peat which measures roughly 40m by 25m and is 0.5–0.8m higher than the surrounding ground. A series of test-trenches were excavated to previously undisturbed subsoil across the area and nothing of archaeological significance was identified.
