Pre-development testing was carried out on 12 and 13 October 2010 on a site at Neale Road, Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo. The proposed development consisted of the construction of a single-storey 1383m2 foodstore. The testing was part of a request for further information by Mayo County Council and was required due to the size of the proposed development area. There were no archaeological monuments visible within or in the immediate vicinity of the proposed development site, which was located on the west side of the Neale Road on the southern outskirts of Ballinrobe town and consisted of a gently undulating field of pasture enclosed by drystone walls.
Testing consisted of the excavation (by machine) of seven trenches located to best cover the development area. The trenches measured 130.5m, 40m, 40.4m, 39.8m, 40m, 40.1m and 39.5m long respectively, 0.9–1.4m wide and 0.25–1.2m deep. Below the topsoil was modern fill, orange/brown friable silt loam and orange/grey/brown plastic clay (natural subsoils). The topsoil contained a number of modern pottery sherds and modern glass fragments. The fill contained several sherds of modern pottery, modern glass fragments and a horseshoe.
Nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered during testing.
