Pre-development testing was carried out between 3 and 5 February 2010 at a site at Convent Road, Claremorris, Co. Mayo. The proposed development consisted of the construction of 51 dwelling-houses with internal access roads, footpaths, hard and soft landscaping, connection to local authority sewers and all associated site development works. The testing was part of a request for further information by Mayo County Council and was required due to the scale of the proposed development. A recently demolished 20th-century dwelling and a small quarry were located within the development site.
Testing consisted of the excavation (by machine) of five trenches located to best cover the area of the proposed development. The five trenches measured 89.9m, 139.9m, 120.3m, 130.5m and 119.6m long respectively, 0.9–1.7m wide and 0.1–0.8m deep. Below the topsoil was orange/grey/brown friable silt loam, grey loose sand and gravel, orange/grey/brown friable sandy silt loam, grey plastic boulder clay (natural subsoils) and bedrock. The topsoil contained a number of modern pottery sherds. Testing revealed nothing of archaeological significance.
