A licence was obtaine0d in 2008 in advance of the topsoil-stripping of lan0000000ds to the north of the existing landfill and recycling centre at Derrinumera, Newport, Co. Mayo. Works were delayed and did not take place until 2010. Previously, an enlargement of the landfill took place in 2003 and associated archaeological works took place under licences 03E0257 and 03E1209 (Excavations 2003, Nos 1322 and 1321).
In September and October 2010, c. 2 acres of topsoil and peat were stripped to the north of the landfill. Works took place in Derrinumera and Drumilra townlands. The peat varied in depth across the area from 0.3m to over 2m in places. Peat rested on brown/yellow mottled boulder clay. The peat was stockpiled for future use as material for capping the landfill. No finds, features or deposits of an archaeological nature were encountered during monitoring.
