Monitoring took place during refurbishment of a playground referred to as Mercy Park and located in the north-west sector of Ballina town. Formally part of Ballina Union Workhouse, the area was used as a burial-ground in the 19th century. The purpose of the monitoring was to keep burials intact and where necessary level the ground up and place new playground equipment into or above existing sod levels. Pockets of disturbance had occurred and a rim sherd of North Devon sgraffito was found amongst fill in the north-east corner of the park.
