Testing of a possible standing stone at Lisgaugh, Doon, Co. Limerick, was carried out on foot of a request by the Department of Education and Science, who own the site. The possible standing stone was noted during a previous assessment of the site on which it is proposed to construct a school and associated services. The aim of the testing was to assess whether or not the stone was archaeological in nature. Two test-trenches were excavated immediately adjacent to the stone. A concrete base into which the stone is set was exposed in both trenches. No evidence for an ancient stone socket was uncovered and no associated finds, features or deposits were noted in either trench.
