Test excavation was undertaken on this site as part of a planning application for the construction of an art gallery as an extension to a 19th-century charitable home. The site lies on the northern precinct of the medieval St John’s Priory, with standing remains on the site. The work entailed monitoring of geophysical bores, and excavation of three test-pits. The early 18th-century parade ground of the barracks was uncovered, along with substantial quantities of building stone from the priory, and disarticulated human bone. There was limited evidence for the town wall on the site boundary. Full excavation of archaeological deposits will be carried out in advance of any construction works.
