Monitoring of excavation works associated with the retirement/removal of existing poles and steel masts and the erection of replacement poles, all associated with an existing 38Kv overhead electrical line, within the designated zone of archaeological potential of The Curragh, was undertaken following the formulation of a mitigation strategy agreed with the National Monuments Service. In that regard, an existing pole structure in the centre of a possible ditch barrow (KD022–088) and at the base of the bank on the eastern side of a ring-barrow (KD022–042) were removed. All excavation works associated with the pole-pits for the replacement structures, none of which were located within 15m of any previously identified archaeological monument, were monitored. In addition, the removal of all existing poles, together with excavation works associated with the burial of the lower sections of steel masts, was also monitored.
No features, deposits or artifacts of archaeological interest were uncovered during the course of the works.
