Monitoring of tie-in works for the R417 realignment at Ardreigh, Athy, was undertaken at the request of Kildare County Council. The construction of the road had led to a large excavation campaign that recovered extensive evidence for the graveyard, motte-and-bailey and settlement associated with the medieval borough of Ardreigh. The tie-in works involved minimal excavation in undisturbed ground and accordingly nothing of archaeological interest was noted. Finds included fragments of willow pattern, glazed earthenwares, green bottle glass, cabbage green ware and a complete bottle of ‘Nujol’, an early 20th-century remedy for constipation.
