An assessment was carried out at Coolclogher, Killarney, to establish the potential impact on the archaeological resource of a proposed housing development. The site was located adjacent to KE 066–086, a possible ringfort/rath, and measured some 4,500 m².
Testing was carried out over two days in June 2010. Fifteen test-trenches were excavated, measuring c. 2,000m in total length. The programme of test-trenching identified a series of agricultural features – furrows and a ditch – which all appeared to be post-medieval or modern in date. One possible shallow pit (1.8m x 0.6m and 0.12m) was also identified. This was sectioned, revealing two fills, the lower of which was rich in charcoal. Despite opening an area around this feature, no further possible archaeological activity was found. Without any finds or any indication of function other than burning, its purpose remained unclear, and it appeared to be of little archaeological significance.
No evidence was found to suggest that any archaeological features extended out from KE 066–086. Furthermore, a walkover of the possible rath suggested that it may not in fact be an archaeological monument but instead the result of 18th-century landscaping/tree planting.
