As a component of their Galway city gas project, Bord Gáis inserted a new 90mm pipeline to connect to the existing 250mm pipe that presently runs along the R337. The new pipeline extends southwards from the existing pipeline along Rosary Lane for a distance of c. 120m. The site is located a short distance to the west of a 18th/19th-century house, GA094–017. This house is within the Lenaboy Castle complex.
This phase of work was carried out on 10–12 August 2010 and consisted of the mechanical excavation of a narrow pipe trench extending the length of Rosary Lane from Taylor’s Hill to the corner of Taylor’s Hill Court. The pipe trench measured 0.4m wide and was excavated to a maximum depth of 0.65m. The stratigraphy consisted of modern road fill 0.25m deep overlying a layer of dark-brown silty sand with frequent small to medium-sized stones. Below this, occurring intermittently, was a yellow/brown natural boulder clay. These layers were uniform throughout, occasionally interrupted by modern infill around service installations. There was no evidence of material of archaeological significance.
