Testing was carried out in the grounds of Lenaboy Castle, Taylor’s Hill, Galway, on 11 and 12 October 2010. The proposed development is located within the old Lenaboy estate in close proximity to GA094–017, classified as an 18th/19th-century mansion and is within an architectural conservation area. Groundworks involved the mechanical excavation of four trenches, each measuring 15–30m long, 1.5m wide and 0.8m deep. The stratigraphy consisted of a thin topsoil, composed of a mid- to dark-brown peaty silt with frequent roots and medium-sized granite stones 0.4m in depth. This overlay a coarse gravelly orange/grey, sandy clay and natural bedrock. This stratigraphy was consistently uniform across the site with the exception of a number of stone-filled pits. It would appear, based on cartographic sources and an examination of the soil profile, that the land has been left unimproved in modern times. There was no evidence of any finds, materials or features of archaeological potential.
