Excavation was carried out at Annagh Hill 2, Co. Galway, in advance of the M17 Galway (Rathmorrissy) to Tuam Archaeological Services Contract (2010) forming part of the N17/N18 Gort to Tuam PPP scheme in County Galway. The Archaeological Services Contract (2010) was commissioned by Galway County Council and funded by the National Roads Authority. Full excavation was undertaken at the site in June 2010.
The site consisted of a burnt-stone spread and an associated pit located within a large naturally occurring hollow. The subcircular spread measured 5m by 4m and was comprised of soft loose dark-grey/black silty clay with angular stones, burnt stones and occasional charcoal. There was one associated subcircular pit which measured 1.6m by 1.5m and had a depth of 0.2m. The pit contained two fills comprising of a primary fill of compact black silt and fire-cracked stone with occasional charcoal and a secondary fill of moderately compact mid- to dark-brown slightly sandy silt with rare medium sub-angular stones, frequent small pebbles and occasional charcoal and fire-cracked stones.
