An archaeological evaluation consisting of five mechanically excavated test-trenches was undertaken at this site. The work took place prior to the development of a car park associated with the current church which is situated upon an Early Christian foundation. Archaeological remains were encountered in Trench 3 (the northernmost trench) and took the form of a shallow pit that was excavated into the natural subsoil. Finds recovered from this feature include iron slag, animal bone and the blade of a triangular section knife of probable 14–16th-century date (Philip Macdonald, pers. comm.). Little else of archaeological significance was encountered and this is interpreted as representing small-scale medieval industrial activity.
