Monitoring of topsoil-stripping/primary ground-reduction works was undertaken during 27 September to 1 October 2010 and on 31 January 2011 at a proposed quarry extension at Hicks Quarry, Ballyconnell Road, Gortmullan, Derrylin, Co. Fermanagh. Quarrying works at the site are to be undertaken in four distinct phases. Consequently, the monitoring works undertaken to date relate to two areas within the south-west and north-east portions of the proposed development area only.
No archaeological features were identified during this initial phase of monitoring at the site. However, monitoring works have to date been restricted to the area defined above and it is currently anticipated that later phases of extensions to the existing quarry associated with the current development proposal will be undertaken at the site.
