Monitoring was undertaken intermittently at the site of the proposed Centre for Applied Science and Health (CASH) building at the Institute of Technology Tallaght, Co. Dublin. Monitoring was recommended in the mitigation measures outlined in a testing report undertaken at the site by Melanie McQuade under licence 10E26 (see No. 298 above). The institute and proposed C.A.S.H. building are located within the zone of archaeological potential for Tallaght (DU021–037/DU022–018).
Previous monitoring in the immediate area identified disturbed human remains and a possible wall was identified during monitoring of an ESB duct to the north of the site. Monitoring was undertaken in two stages to date: topsoil-stripping of the area of the proposed building and the sod removal for a temporary access road; and the excavation of a service trench during week ending 13–08–10 to the south of the existing Synergy Centre in a green space.
No features of archaeological significance were uncovered to date; however, medieval pottery (12th–14th century) was recovered from the topsoil/sod during stripping for the temporary access road.
All works at the site ceased during October/November 2010 after the transfer of ownership of the site to NAMA. Monitoring of the remainder of the site works is to be completed when, and if, the project recommences. This will include the monitoring of the removal of the temporary access road, monitoring of the remaining service trenches, and monitoring of any remaining ground disturbances.
