Test excavation was carried out on behalf of the Railway Procurement Agency (RPA) at Silloge, Co. Dublin. This followed on from a geophysical survey carried out by Target Archaeological Geophysics during 2009 (licence 09R195). The geophysical anomalies in Silloge townland were interpreted as a potential prehistoric settlement sites. A total of five trenches were excavated at Silloge as part of this assessment.
The testing identified the presence of elements of a subrectangular enclosing ditch within Trenches 6 and 6a that may date to the early medieval or medieval periods. The deposits at the site were unclear and appeared to date from many periods. Rectilinear medieval and post-medieval drainage ditches were uncovered in Trenches 1–3. These may relate to the RMP site (deserted medieval village) located in the adjacent field.
