The excavation of four geotechnical test-pits and three window samples located to the rear of the existing structure on 5 High Street was monitored. The test-pits measured a maximum of 1.75m by 0.8m and 2.5m deep. Post-medieval deposits were identified at a depth of 1.1m (13.48m OD) sealed below rubble fill. Deposits of medieval and potentially earlier material, with a high organic content, were uncovered at a depth of 1.4m (13.18m OD). The results of the window sampling indicate that archaeological deposits survive to a depth of between 4.2m and 4.5m (i.e. 10.38–10.3m OD).
