An archaeological evaluation was carried out during the insertion of a new electric cabling along Priory Park, Holywood. The proposed cable trench extended along the north wall of Holywood Priory which is a Scheduled Monument, DOW 001:002.
Following the collapse of part of the priory boundary wall, it was decided that the cable would be re-routed to the opposite side of Priory Park, before being re-connected with the existing cable adjacent to the priory wall. An inspection of the exposed cable trench revealed no evidence of archaeological deposits or features. Further ground works associated with the reconstruction of the priory wall revealed human skeletal remains. Excavation of these remains identified the partially articulated remains of a human skeleton and a disarticulated skull of a second individual. All identified human skeletal remains were removed from site prior to being re-interred.
