The proposed development, the construction of a telecommunications installation consisting of a 12m high street works pole and associated equipment, is located 25m south-west of the junction of Movilla Road and Abbey Dale Avenue in Newtownards, Co. Down.
There are several recorded archaeological sites within the vicinity of the proposed development including Movilla Abbey (DOW006–013), which is located 90m to the west-north-west and dates from the Early Christian period through to the late medieval.
Monitoring was carried out in relation to the development on 4 February 2010. The monitoring supervised all groundworks associated with foundation cuts for the street works pole, an equipment cabinet and ducting linking these features. This revealed that the ground within the footprint of the street works pole, cable trench and majority of the equipment cabinet had been previously disturbed. No archaeological features or artefacts were uncovered.
