Monitoring of ground-reduction works was carried out on behalf of the Confederation of Community Groups at the site of a proposed office building located to the rear of the existing Ballybot building complex at 22 Cornmarket, Newry, Co. Down. Monitoring works were carried out in response to a planning condition imposed by NIEA:HMU upon the development relating to the possible survival of subsurface archaeological remains associated with the industrial heritage site IHR03683:000:00, a spinning and stitching mill which was recorded within the boundaries of the proposed development area.
Monitoring of both primary ground reduction works and excavation of foundation trenches and pile caps revealed subsoil within the area to consist largely of alluvial silts. With the exception of an old floor surface associated with the previous building at the site, no evidence of any subsurface building or industrial activity associated with the historic mill site was identified during the course of monitoring works.
