The proposed development concerns a ‘public realm’ scheme located in the centre of Downpatrick, Co. Down. The scheme will involve improvements to Market Street, St Patrick’s Avenue, Irish Street, English Street, Scotch Street and Church Street. These improvements will include new street lighting and tree planting, which will require excavations up to 1m deep. The scheme will also see the removal of an existing feature on Scotch Street and its replacement with a stepped feature constructed from granite wall which will lead to a seated area.
Monitoring was carried out on 25 August 2010 in relation to groundworks associated with trial investigation relating to existing services at the south side of the entrance into St Patrick’s Grove from Market Street. Nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered. Archaeological monitoring of the remaining groundworks was postponed until 2011.
