Monitoring of the foundation trenches for the extension showed that the area at the rear of the museum had previously been filled using a greyish-brown, silty earth and rubble. Numerous artifacts were recovered from the infill, with the pottery ranging in date from the medieval to modern period. A small 16th-century Portuguese glass bead, similar to those found in the Girona/Trinidad objects (Spanish Armada), was also discovered.
