Monitoring of groundworks was undertaken on 26 April 2010 and relates to the proposed development of the site which will consist of the construction of a new vehicular access to Inishowen Co-Op on to a recently constructed portion of the new Buncrana inner relief road and the relocation northwards of the existing Rockytown Road (LS5016) junction with the proposed Buncrana inner relief road together with associated site works.
Monitoring at the site revealed a deep layer of overburden which contained large quantities of modern refuse material, including planed timber, sheet plastic, portions of tarmac, sections of water-main pipe, glass and general refuse. Up to 0.8m of the overburden layer was removed to achieve construction depth within this area. Within the eastern portion of this area, heavily disturbed natural subsoil was identified at a depth of 0.55–0.65m below the previously existing surface level. As with the layer of overburden which directly overlaid it, the layer of disturbed subsoil contained modern refuse material, though in more moderate quantities, and may represent a layer of redeposited subsoil associated with the landscaping of this area during works connected with the construction of the existing roads. No archaeological features were identified during monitoring at the site.
