A proposed development at No. 1 Heathmount, Portstewart, Co. Derry, concerns the demolition of all buildings currently on-site and the construction of a replacement building consisting of six apartments with associated car-parking and services. Portstewart’s origin as an 18th-century village, combined with the recorded archaeological sites within the area, has led to an area of archaeological potential being defined within the town. The proposed development is located within this area of archaeological potential.
Pre-development testing took place at the site on 18 August, with two trenches excavated within the area of the garden. The adaptation of the property during its lifetime since the mid-19th century has led to ground disturbance related to the construction and demolition of several buildings while current structures have been extended. Testing revealed nothing of archaeological significance.
