Pre-development test excavation was carried out on 9 August 2010 as part of an impact assessment required for the proposed development of a hostel, 8 holiday homes and associated works, at Rerrin, Bere Island, west Cork. Eight test-trenches were excavated in total, covering the areas of the development site not previously quarried away. The stratigraphy on the site consisted of between c. 0.4m and 0.25m of a grey/brown loamy topsoil, overlying stony boulder clay and numerous rock outcrops. No archaeological features or finds were noted. However, it was not possible to access all the site at this time, so licensed monitoring of topsoil removal was recommended if the development was to proceed.
