A metal-detection survey and testing were undertaken at the site of a proposed dwelling extension at Annmount, Kinsale, Co. Cork. This was in response to a planning condition based on the discovery in 2006 of evidence potentially relating to the 1601 Earl of Thomond’s Second Camp by the Kinsale Battlefield Project directly adjacent to the proposed site (Excavations 2006, No. 358, 06E0722).
Works were centred on the proposed footings of the extension. An ‘all metal’ metal-detection survey was undertaken followed by the machine excavation of three test-trenches. The site had undergone considerable disturbance associated with the original construction of the house in the 20th century. As a result the area of investigation was heavily disturbed with hardcore and utility trenches. None of the original ground surface survived and nothing of archaeological significance was discovered.
